Knautia macedonica (Macedonian Scabious)

Macedonian Scabious, Crimson Scabious, Scabiosa rumelica

Undemanding, Knautia macedonica (Macedonian Scabious) is a clump-forming perennial with masses of deep crimson, pincushion flowers, 1.5 in. across (3-4 cm), that bloom in succession from early summer until fall. Attractive to butterflies, they are borne atop slender, branching stems with barely lobed basal leaves but deeply divided leaves higher up. Knautia may be short-lived but will generally self-seed under optimum conditions. This airy perennial adds long-lasting color to the garden and performs best in climates with cool summer nights.

  • Blooming from early summer to fall, Knautia grows in upright clumps, up to 18-36 in. tall (45-90 cm) and 18-24 in. wide (45-60 cm).
  • Easy to grow, Knautia thrives in moderately fertile, medium moisture, and well-drained soils in full sun. Prefers neutral to alkaline soils. Provide a sheltered location. Drought tolerant and deer resistant
  • Lovely in beds, borders, cottage gardens, prairie plantings, or gravel gardens. Good in containers or as fresh cut or dried flowers too!
  • Virtually disease-free. Watch for aphids.
  • Promptly remove spent flowers to encourage additional bloom.
  • Propagate by seed in pots in a cold frame in spring or propagate by basal cuttings in spring
  • Native to central Europe
