Award-winning Parthenocissus henryana (Chinese Virginia Creeper) is a vigorous, fast-growing, deciduous climber boasting dark velvety blue-green leaves with 3-5 leaflets adorned with beautiful silver veins and deep burgundy undersides. In the fall the foliage turns brilliant shades of red to reddish purple. Usually hidden by the foliage, greenish-white flowers appear in the upper leaf axils in late spring to early summer. They give way to round, fleshy, blue-black berries, visible only after the leaves have fallen, and only if the birds have not devoured them.

Chinese Virginia Creeper offers greater aesthetics than Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia Creeper) and Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston Ivy) and is not as rampant, therefore better suited to growing in small gardens.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • May grow up to 20-30 ft. tall (6-9 m).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. This plant is not fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions. Tolerates full shade but best fall color typically occurs in sunny locations.
  • A wonderful vine for walls and buildings, large trellises, arbors or fences. Also effective as a ground cover to disguise tree stumps, rock piles, and other eyesores, or for erosion control on slopes.
  • Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for glasshouse red spider mite and vine weevil. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by layering or hardwood cuttings.
  • Native to China
