Robust, Picea pungens ‘Hoopsii’ (Colorado Spruce) is a small evergreen tree of elongated pyramidal habit, densely clothed with long, thick, intense powdery-blue needles. It has a tendency to develop multiple leaders and may look irregularly shaped when young. However, it can be developed into an elegant tree with selective pruning of the redundant lead shoots. A moderate grower, 6-8 in. per year (15-20 cm), this stately Colorado Spruce is regarded by many as one of the bluest cultivars of the species. It makes a terrific accent in most garden settings.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 25 ft. tall (750 cm) and 15 ft. wide (450 cm) at maturity.
  • Performs best in full sun in slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of dry sites, air pollution, and salt. Some drought tolerance once established. Generally prefers cool climates and will struggle in hot and humid climate areas.
  • Perfect as a distinctive specimen plant in the sunny border.
  • Watch for adelgids, aphids and conifer red spider mite. Easy to grow and easy to care for.
  • No pruning required.
  • Propagate by grafting or semi-hardwood cuttings.
