Very popular, Picea mariana ‘Nana’ (Black Spruce) is a dwarf evergreen conifer forming a compact cushion of dense, rounded habit. Prized for its tiny, tightly congested blue-green needles, small size and lovely texture, it is an excellent choice as a specimen for rock gardens, foundation plantings or shrub borders. Extremely slow-growing, 2 in. per year (5 cm), it is highly resistant to insects and disease and requires little to no maintenance.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 2 ft. tall (60 cm) and 3 ft. wide (90 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moist, acidic, well-drained soils. Prefers cool climates and will struggle in hot and humid climate areas.
  • No serious pest and disease issues. Keep an eye out for adelgids, aphids and conifer red spider mite.
  • No pruning required.
  • Propagate by seed sown in containers in a cold frame in spring or grafting in winter. Hardwood cuttings can be taken in late summer.
