Stately, Pinus nigra ‘Komet’ (Austrian Pine) is an evergreen conifer of narrowly upright and columnar habit. The dense and compact, upward-growing branches are adorned with the lush foliage of silvery green needles, which persist for several years on the tree. A moderate grower, 6-12 in. per year (15-30 cm), this lovely Austrian Pine is a beautiful vertical accent in the sunny garden. Makes an excellent specimen, screen, or windbreak.
- Grows up to 15 ft. tall (450 cm) and 4 ft. wide (120 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates clay soils, urban pollution, salt, and drought once established. Thrives better than other pines in chalky soils.
- Perfect for coastal gardens, cottage gardens, hedges, and windbreaks.
- Watch for aphids, adelgids, sawflies, and pine shoot moths. Easy to grow, easy to care for, and rarely browsed by deer.
- Will require regular care and upkeep.
- Native to Southern and Eastern Europe.
