Patchouli, Pucha Pot
Prized for its fragrant oil, Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli) is an aromatic and tender perennial herb from the mint family. It forms a spreading mound of thin branching stems reaching up to 3 ft. in height and spread (90 cm). They are clothed with opposite, irregularly toothed, oval leaves, 2-3 in. long (5-7 cm). Both the stems and the leaves are aromatic when crushed. Small, very fragrant, pale purple to white flowers, arranged in dense woolly spikes, appear in the fall. They give way to tiny seeds used for propagation. Cultivated for its widely used perfumed oil, Patchouli is an ingredient commonly used in soaps, lotions, perfumes, air fresheners. Also used in cooking (although not as popular as other culinary herbs), Patchouli is popular in homeopathic medicine and aromatherapy. The oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, and is an effective natural insect repellant. Patchouli is a short-lived plant, usually lasting two to three years.
