Protea cynaroides, King Protea, Cape Artichoke Flower, Giant Protea, Honeypot, King Sugar Bush, Mediterranean shrubs, Evergreen Shrubs, Drought tolerant shrubs

The national flower of South Africa, Protea cynaroides (King Protea) is a sparsely branched evergreen shrub prized for its huge bowl-shaped flower heads, 6-12 in. across (15-30 cm). Each spectacular flower head features a central bouquet of inner flowers surrounded by stiff, pointed, colorful bracts. The flowers can be wide open, like dinner plates, or narrowly funnel-shaped. Their color ranges from greenish-white through silky silvery pinks to reds. In its native habitat, King Protea blooms primarily in the warmer months but sporadically throughout the year. Borne at the tips of thick reddish stems, the ravishing blossoms cover the leathery foliage of elliptic, dark green, glossy leaves. Vigorous plants produce 6-10 flower heads in one season, although some exceptional plants can produce up to 40 flower heads on one plant. The flowers are visited by nectar-feeding birds, bees, and beetles, but the birds pollinate the flowers. King Protea is an adaptable shrub perfect for the sunny, well-drained garden or as a container specimen. It is prized worldwide as a magnificent cut flower and ranks as a top choice among tropical flowers for enthusiasts and gardeners.

  • Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm).
  • Easily grown in poor, neutral to acid, well-drained soils in full sun. Requires little irrigation and tolerates coastal conditions. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Great for Mediterranean gardens, city gardens, coastal gardens and containers. Excellent cut flower for arrangements.
  • Generally pest free. Keep an eye out for chlorosis (magnesium deficiency). Deer resistant.
  • Plants grown under glass may require pruning to restrict growth. Prune in late winter or early spring.
  • Propagate by seed sown at 55-65°F (13-18°C) when ripe or in spring, or take semi-hardwood cuttings in summer.
  • Native to South Africa
