Psilotum nudum (Whisk Fern)

Whisk Fern, Skeleton Fern

Psilotum nudum, Whisk Fern, Skeleton Fern, Evergreen fern, Shade plants, shade perennial, plants for shade, plants for wet soil

Prized as a rare primitive vascular plant, Psilotum nudum (Whisk Fern) is a small evergreen fern with many upright, bright green to yellow or yellowish-orange, triangle-shaped stems and showy, bright yellow spore cases on the upper stems. Lacking leaves, Whisk Fern can be either epiphytic (growing on trees) or terrestrial. The stems are erect when terrestrial, and are often pendulous when epiphytic. Native to Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, Whisk Fern is considered rather weedy by some or grown as a curiosity by others. Primarily recommended for natural landscapes and habitat restorations, Whisk Fern can also be grown in containers.

  • Grows up to 18 in. tall and wide (45 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun, part shade to full shade in humusy, acid to neutral, moist but well-drained soils. It is somewhat tolerant to salty wind but not direct salt spray.
  • Generally pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by spores.
  • Native to Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
