Pulsatilla vernalis (Lady of the Snows)

Lady of the Snows, Shaggy Windflower, Pale Pasque-flower, Spring Pasque Flower, Anemone vernalis

Pulsatilla vernalis, Lady of the Snows, Shaggy Windflower, Anemone vernalis, White Flowers, Drought tolerant perennials,

The loveliest of dwarf Pasque Flowers, Pulsatilla vernalis (Lady of the Snows) is a semi-evergreen clump-forming perennial boasting somewhat nodding, open, cup-shaped, white flowers on short stems in early spring. They open, sometimes before the snow disappears, from densely hairy flower buds which appear in late winter. The attractive blossoms contrast beautifully with the luminous boss of golden yellow stamens. They are followed by equally ornamental, silky seed-heads, which add to the charm of the plant. The blossoms rise above a rosette of feathery leaves which remain attractive throughout the growing season. Pasque Flowers will seed themselves all over, if you are lucky, then go summer dormant. Enjoying a long season of interest, these low growing plants are suitable for rock gardens or the front of the perennial border. They combine well with spring-flowering bulbs and ground covers.

  • Grows up to 2-4 in. tall (5-10 cm) and 4 in. wide (10 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun in gritty, moist well-drained soils. Good drainage is essential to survival. Protect from excessive winter wet. Resents root disturbance and may be difficult to establish, so plant when small and leave undisturbed.
  • No serious insect or disease issues.
  • Excellent addition to sunny border fronts, rock gardens, or alpine beds.
  • Propagate by seed sown in pots in an open frame as soon as seed is ripe. Propagate by taking root cuttings in winter
  • Can cause mild stomach upset if ingested
  • Native to Europe, Asia.
