Crown Cactus
Rebutia Carnival is a small, attractive cactus cultivar known for its striking blooms and ease of care, making it popular among cactus enthusiasts. It belongs to the Rebutia genus, which includes many species and hybrids recognized for their small, globular shape and brilliant flowers.
Rebutia is a member of the Cactaceae family, which also includes the popular Chrismas cactus, prickly pear (opuntia), pincushion cactus (mammillaria), and the iconic saguaro cactus and San Pedro cactus.
Rebutia Carnival is a compact, clump-forming cactus that develops small, round stems covered in numerous small spines. This cactus is highly regarded for its beautiful, showy flowers, which come in vibrant colors, typically shades of orange, red, pink, and yellow. These flowers create a striking contrast against the cactus’s green, spiny body. Its relatively small size and vibrant blooms make it a favorite for indoor cultivation and small container gardens.
While Rebutia Carnival is a hybrid and does not occur naturally in the wild, the species within the Rebutia genus are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, primarily in Bolivia and Argentina. These cacti grow at high altitudes in their natural habitat, often in rocky, well-drained soil. They are well-adapted to harsh conditions, including intense sunlight, cold nights, and minimal rainfall.
Like other Rebutia species, Carnival exhibits a globular to clumping growth habit. As the plant matures, it produces offsets or “pups” around the base, which can form attractive clusters over time.
Rebutia Carnival is a relatively small cactus, typically growing to about 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) in height and about 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) in width. As the plant matures, it can form clumps of several small globular stems, which adds to its decorative appeal. Its size makes it easy to manage and an excellent choice for small pots or indoor displays.
One of the most notable features of this flowering cactus is its stunning flowers. The blooms are large in relation to the cactus’s size and are typically orange, red, or yellow, though some hybrids may produce pink flowers. These funnel-shaped flowers can reach up to 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) in diameter, covering the plant in a dazzling display of color during the blooming season. The flowers emerge from the sides of the cactus, adding to the plant’s ornamental value.
They typically bloom from spring to early summer, although under ideal conditions, it may produce flowers sporadically throughout the growing season. When cared for properly, this cactus can produce a profusion of blooms year after year.
The stem is small, round, and globular, with a green to dark green color. The stem is divided into small, well-defined ribs, each covered with areoles from which the spines emerge. The spines are short, thin, and white or yellow, forming a soft cushion around the stem. Unlike some other cactus species, the spines on Rebutia ‘Carnival’ are not particularly sharp, making the plant easier to handle.
This flowering cactus is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and prefers warmer conditions.
Rebutia is primarily grown for its ornamental value. Its vibrant flowers and compact size make it a popular choice for indoor gardening, container gardening, and rock gardens. It can brighten up windowsills, balconies, or small outdoor spaces. This cactus is also a great addition to succulent arrangements or as a standalone specimen in decorative pots.
During its flowering season, the flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
This cactus is considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe choice for households with children or animals. However, as with all cacti, care should be taken when handling the plant due to its spines, which can cause minor skin irritation.
This cactus plant is generally resistant to deer and rabbits due to its lack of palatability.
Rebutia is highly drought-tolerant. It stores water in its fleshy stems and can survive long periods without watering. It is an ideal plant for low-water gardens or indoor environments where regular watering might be difficult.
Rebutia is not considered an invasive species. As a slow-growing cactus, it poses no threat to local ecosystems and does not spread aggressively. It is easy to manage and contains its growth within its pot or garden area.
Rebutia cacti thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Place them in a location where they receive plenty of light, but avoid direct midday sun to prevent sunburn.
During the growing season (spring to summer), water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly, as the plant enters a dormant phase.
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Rebutia does best in soil that dries out quickly between waterings to avoid root rot.
Rebutia prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C) but can tolerate cooler conditions. Protect it from frost.
Feed Rebutia with a cactus-specific fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
Pruning is generally unnecessary unless removing dead or damaged parts. Repot every 2-3 years in the spring to refresh the soil and give the plant room to grow. Use a slightly larger pot each time.
Rebutia easily propagates through offsets or “pups” that grow at the base. Simply remove them and replant in fresh soil.
Common pests include mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Overwatering may lead to root rot or fungal infections, so ensure proper watering practices.
