Rhodohypoxis baurii (Red Star)

Rhodohypoxis baurii (Red Star) is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial forming a carpet of 6-petalled, star-shaped pink to red flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm). The cute flowers last for a few months from late spring to fall, often intermittently, nearly covering the foliage of grass-like, upright, keeled hairy leaves. Rhodohypoxis baurii is a creeping, stoloniferous plant that grows from tuberous rhizomes. It goes dormant in the fall when the leaves turn yellow. A diminutive, enchanting plant that is ideal for rock gardens or containers.

• Grows up to 3-6 in. tall (7-15 cm) and 10-12 in. wide (25-30 cm).
• Best grown in full sun, in moderately fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acid, well-drained soils. The plant enjoys plenty of moisture in the spring and early summer but dislikes wetness in the winter.
• Perfect for rock gardens or containers.
• Virtually pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for glasshouse red spider mite and thrips when grown in an alpine house.
• Propagate by seed sown in pots as soon as ripe or in spring, germinate at 42-54°F (6-12°C). Propagate by division in late autumn.
