Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' (Great Burnet)

Great Burnet 'Tanna', Greater Burnet 'Tanna', Greater Salad Burnet 'Tanna', Burnet Bloodwort 'Tanna', Sanguisorba 'Tanna'

Extending the blooming season well into fall, award-winning Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' (Great Burnet) is a clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial forming neat mounds of blue-green, crimped leaves, each finely divided into oblong leaflets. Deep red bottlebrush flowers appear atop skinny stems from midsummer through fall. They weave through other perennials, adding color and life to the late summer garden. More compact than other burnets, this brilliant, cheerful ornamental burnet is a good choice for small gardens. It is perfect towards the front of the sunny border or in containers where its lovely foliage and enchanting spiky bottlebrush blooms can be admired.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 24 in. high (60 cm) and 18-24 in. across (45-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils that do not dry out. Give it afternoon shade in hot summer climates.
  • Makes a lovely accent in beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, or prairie plantings. Great for cutting.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by division in spring.
