Sanguisorba menziesii (Menzies’ Burnet)

Menzies' Burnet, Alaskan Burnet

AGM Award
Sanguisorba menziesii, Menzies' Burnet, Alaskan Burnet, Pink Flowers, Red Flowers

Blooming earlier than most burnets, Sanguisorba menziesii (Menzies’ Burnet) is a clump-forming perennial forming a low mound of blue-green leaves, each finely divided into oblong leaflets. Tight bottle brushes in intense maroon-purple appear atop slender stems from early to late summer. They weave through other perennials, adding color and life to the late summer garden, and retain their color even as they fade into seed heads. Menzies’ Burnet is a great choice for the middle of a sunny border or containers.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 30-36 in. high (75-90 cm) and 18-24 in. across (45-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to partial shade in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils that do not dry out. Give it afternoon shade in hot summer climates.
  • Makes a lovely accent in beds and borders, prairie plantings or containers.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Cut foliage back if it gets tired-looking after blooming.
  • Propagate by division in spring or autumn.
  • Native to Alaska.
