Saxifraga cotyledon (Pyramidal Saxifrage)

Pyramidal Saxifrage, Great Alpine Rockfoil, Greater Evergreen Saxifrage, Silver Plume, Jungfrau Saxifrage

Spectacular in flower, Saxifraga cotyledon (Pyramidal Saxifrage) is a mat-forming evergreen perennial producing large flat rosettes of glaucous, broadly strap-shaped, finely toothed leaves, 3 in. long (6 cm). In late spring to early summer, it develops an arching, pyramidal flowering stem, 2 ft. high (60 cm), bearing up to a thousand of cup-shaped white flowers, sometimes marked with red inside. Pyramidal Saxifrage is monocarpic and dies after blooming. It is, however, very easy to grow from seed and will self-sow when happy. A wonderful subject for rock gardens and pots.

  • Grows up to 12 in. tall and wide (30 cm).
  • Best in partial shade in moderately fertile, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils.
  • Great choice for rock gardens or containers.
  • Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for slugs, aphids and glasshouse red spider mite.
  • Propagate by separating rosettes and rooting as cuttings in late spring or early summer.
  • Native to Europe
