Sparaxis tricolor (Harlequin Flower)
Harlequin Flower, Wand flower
Adding a cheerful splash of color in borders or containers, Sparaxis tricolor (Harlequin Flower) is a cormous perennial which produces loose spikes of up to 5 brightly colored, open star-shaped flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm). Blooming for weeks in late spring or early summer, this little bulb from South Africa features flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, lavender or white, adorned with a bright yellow throat outlined in black, hence the common name of 'Harlequin Flower'. Borne on wiry stalks, the alluring blooms rise above fans of sword-shaped leaves, which die back shortly after flowering ends.
- Grows up to 6-12 in. tall (15-30 cm) and 3-5 in. wide (7-12 cm). Naturalizes readily and will come back year after year.
- Performs best in full sun and enjoys well-drained soils. Water freely while actively growing and fertilize very lightly. Hardy to zones 9 through 11 and in zones 7 and 8 with winter protection.
- This plant is an excellent choice for beds and borders, rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens, or containers. Makes excellent fresh cut flowers.
- Reliable, easy to grow, low maintenance.
- Generally disease free and pest free.
- Plant corms 3 in. deep (7 cm) and 2 in. apart (5 cm) in the fall (warm winter areas) or in spring after the last freeze (cold winter areas).
- Remove spent flower stems and allow foliage to die down naturally.
- Native to South Africa
