Harlequin Flower, Wand flower
Adding a cheerful splash of color in borders or containers, Sparaxis tricolor (Harlequin Flower) is a cormous perennial which produces loose spikes of up to 5 brightly colored, open star-shaped flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm). Blooming for weeks in late spring or early summer, this little bulb from South Africa features flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, lavender or white, adorned with a bright yellow throat outlined in black, hence the common name of ‘Harlequin Flower’. Borne on wiry stalks, the alluring blooms rise above fans of sword-shaped leaves, which die back shortly after flowering ends.
