Bold and tropical looking, Thalia geniculata ‘Ruminoides’ (Red Stemmed Alligator-Flag) is a marginal aquatic perennial forming a dramatic clump of long-stalked, erect, paddle-shaped, lime-green leaves that can reach up to 24 in. in length (60 cm). Blooming from late spring to mid-summer, open panicles of silvery-blue flowers appear on slender stems well above the foliage. The stems are streaked in brilliant red and sometimes are solid red, providing a striking effect in the pond or water garden. Red Stemmed Alligator-Flag is perfect along the shore of a large pond and looks splendid as an island clump in shallow water.

  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in moist to wet loamy soils. Will grow in standing water up to 10 in. deep (25 cm).
  • A beautiful addition to bog gardens, rain gardens, water gardens, or along ponds and streams.
  • Cut back in late fall in preparation for winter. Bring it indoors to spend the winter north of zone 9.
