Incredibly showy, Tropaeolum tricolor (Tricolor Nasturtium) is a summer-dormant, tuberous, perennial climber with a profusion of tricolor flowers from winter to early summer. Borne singly in the leaf axils, the small yellow flowers, 1 in. long (3 cm), are adorned with a showy purple-tipped, orange-red calyx and a long red or purple spur. They create a spectacular floral display for months and contrast nicely against the soft, bright green, deeply lobed leaves. This attractive, delicate-looking but hardy climber is one of the longest flowering species of Tropaeolum. It is mostly cultivated as an ornamental.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 3-10 ft. tall (90-300 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moist, loamy, well-drained soils. Light shade is tolerated in hot summer areas.
  • Generally pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for whiteflies and red spider mites.
  • No pruning needed – allow to die down naturally in midsummer.
  • Propagate by separating tubers when dormant in summer.
  • Native to Chile.
