A Pretty Summer Border with Roses, Foxgloves and Poppies

Plant Combinations, Flowerbeds Ideas, Spring Borders, Summer Borders

Adding a soft punch of color and fruity fragrance to the perennial border, the ravishing orange to tangerine blossoms of English Rose 'Lady Emma Hamilton' (Ausbrother) contrast nicely with the vibrant mauve-blue flowers of award-winning Geranium 'Orion'. Robust and vigorous, this geranium enjoys one of the longest flowering periods of hardy geraniums and rare blue-colored flowers. It mingles with the large, rich purple-plum flowers of Papaver somniferum 'Lauren's Grape' (Opium Poppy). On display for months, the striking blossoms are followed by decorative seed pods that can be used in dried flower arrangements or left in the garden for the visual interest they bring.

Providing architectural height to this border, Digitalis purpurea 'Excelsior Hybrid' is a popular and remarkable strain of Foxgloves boasting tall spikes of pendulous, funnel-shaped blossoms in a lovely range of pastel colors including pink, lavender, and white. Blooming profusely from late spring to mid-summer, the spectacular blossoms are attractive to hummingbirds, which hover near the tubular blossoms, and to birds that flock to the seedheads in the fall.

Long-lasting and easy to replicate, most plants are recipients of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. Enjoy!
