A Singing Mediterranean Pathway

Plant Combinations, Spring Borders, Summer Borders, Fall Borders, Winter Borders

Who wouldn't want to stroll along this beautiful flagstone pathway? Its palette of long-lasting, bright colors includes mostly low-maintenance and water-wise evergreen shrubs and perennials.

Enriching the air with its delightful scent, Lavandula (Lavender) contributes to the beauty of this scenery with its profusion of purple flower spikes which contrast with the silvery-gray evergreen foliage. Shimmering, golden Eschscholzia californica (California Poppy), a wildflower that is ridiculously easy to grow, adds a blast of color in this naturalistic border.

They are interplanted with architectural bouquets of Juncus patens (California Gray Rush), which provide ornamental appeal to the landscape with their fine gray-green to gray-blue foliage and vertical stance. They contrast with Leptospermum scoparium (Tea Tree), a showy, rounded shrub with small, aromatic, needle-like leaves and profuse flowers, which seem to jump out of this plant combination.

Presiding over this glorious planting scheme is a superb specimen of Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' (Black Cherry Plum), whose dark-purple leaves make the other plants further glow.
