Acer palmatum Dissectum Viride Group or Acer 'Viridis' is a dwarf, often multi-stemmed, Japanese maple of low, spreading habit with strongly cascading branches forming a graceful, dome-shaped specimen over time. The delicate foliage of ferny, lace-like leaves with very long, thin lobes, each further dissected into sub-lobes, is bright green through the spring and summer and stands out beautifully in the landscape. In the fall, the leaves turn golden-yellow with occasional splashes of crimson before shedding to the ground. They reveal on mature plants, the elegantly twisted branches that stand out through the winter months. In spring, this Laceleaf Japanese Maple produces small reddish flowers which give way to greenish samaras, which ripen in late summer to early fall. While attractive close-up, the flowers are however not particularly showy from a distance. Vigorous and adaptable, this Japanese Maple makes a wonderful specimen plant and is a great choice for the patio.
- Grows up to 6-10 ft. tall and wide (180-300).
- A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Best leaf color in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Leaf scorch can be caused by a lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure.
- Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, and city gardens.
- Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge.
- May be affected by horse chestnut scale, aphids, and verticillium wilt.
- Propagate by grafting or softwood cuttings.
- Acer palmatum is native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia.
