A spectacular silhouette in the landscape, Aloidendron barberae (Tree Aloe) is a large, fast-growing, evergreen tree-like aloe adorned with a gray, smooth trunk and a rounded, neat crown of fleshy, deep green, recurved leaves. Arranged in a dense rosette, the leaves are long, narrow, deeply channelled, curved and adorned with toothed margins. Beautiful, large, cylindrical, salmon pink flower spikes with green tips are borne in profusion above the foliage on mature plants. Aloidendron barberae is Africa’s largest aloe. A striking sculptural Tree Aloe for the Mediterranean landscape and xeriscape garden. Give it room to grow.

  • Easily grown in dry, well-drained soils in full sun. It can tolerate moderate shade. Weekly watering in the summer, once a month, or not at all in the colder months of winter. Can withstand long periods of drought, but this plant will thrive and flower more profusely if properly watered.
  • Provides a striking focal point in beds and borders, xeriscape gardens, Mediterranean gardens. Can be grown in a container, however, in a few years, this vigorous plant must be transplanted into the ground.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. The leaves may be attacked by aphids and scale insects, which are controlled with an oil-based spray.
  • Easy to propagate by cuttings
