Bupleurum fruticosum (Shrubby Hare's Ear)

Shrubby Hare's Ear

Glowing and shimmering in the sunny border, Bupeurum fruticosum (Shrubby Hare's Ear) is a graceful, aromatic, evergreen shrub with dainty umbels of sulfur yellow flowers, 3-4 in. across (7-10 cm), on upright stems. Blooming from mid-summer to early fall, the blossoms contrast nicely with the attractive foliage of shiny, deep blue-green, leathery leaves. Native to Southern Europe, this rounded, medium-sized shrub makes a subtle but extraordinary background plant. It is particularly useful in dry shade, exposed coastal conditions, or as a filler plant and provides a long-lasting cool presence.

  • Grows upright with a bushy habit to 5-8 ft. high and wide (150-240 cm).
  • Easily grown in average to rich, well-drained soils in full sun. Excellent evergreen shrub for gardens that get little watering. Will grow in poor soils and tolerate coastal conditions thanks to its salt spray resistance.
  • Drought tolerant and deer resistant
  • Great for banks and slopes, beds and borders, hedges, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, Mediterranean gardens, or city gardens.
  • Virtually disease and pest free
  • Propagate by seed in containers in a cold frame in spring; root semi-ripe cuttings in summer
  • Tolerates hard pruning.
