Calluna vulgaris 'Spring Torch' (Heather)

Heather 'Spring Torch', Ling 'Spring Torch', Scottish Heather 'Spring Torch', Scots Heather 'Spring Torch'

Named after the glimmering color of its new spring growth, Calluna vulgaris 'Spring Torch' (Heather) will offer you a fabulous color show all year round. First, its bright, mid-green spring leaves are profusely tipped with yellow, pink and dark red. They will gradually deepen to rich, dark green in early summer before being covered in late summer and early fall (Aug-Oct) by masses of mauve flower spikes. As cold weather sets in, the foliage will add some bronze or purple tones, extending further the season of interest of this arresting plant. This small, upright, mounding evergreen shrub makes a perfect groundcover and well suited to rock gardens.

  • Grows up to 14 in. tall (35 cm) and 24 in. wide (60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in sandy or gravelly, acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Part shade is welcomed in hot summer areas. Moist and cool climates are preferred. Do not let the soil dry out! Protect your plants from strong winds. Mulch with peat moss.
  • Easy to grow, this plant is a welcomed addition to rock gardens and makes an excellent groundcover. Combines well with dwarf conifers and deciduous shrubs.
  • Watch for spider mites, oystershell scale or root rot.
  • Callunas need annual pruning or they become straggly. Prune in spring before the new growth appears.
