Cercis chinensis 'Don Egolf' (Chinese Redbud)
Chinese Redbud 'Don Egolf'
Free-flowering, award-winning Cercis chinensis 'Don Egolf' (Chinese Redbud) is a slow-growing, compact, deciduous shrub or small tree with profuse, densely-clustered, tiny, rosy-mauve flowers that arise before the foliage in spring. The cheerful blossoms literally cover the tree in a spectacular floral display. They last for several weeks before being joined by large, heart-shaped, glossy green leaves. Don Egolf is a sterile cultivar and does not produce seed pods, preserving a neat, clean look all year. This graceful tree enjoys excellent disease resistance and is perfect for small gardens.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 10-12 ft. tall and wide (300-360 cm).
- A full sun to part shade lover, this Redbud is easily grown in well-drained soils. Performs best in moderately fertile soils with regular and consistent moisture. The best flower production is obtained in full sun, but part shade is best in hot summer climates. Needs a winter chill before the flowers set properly.
- Attracts birds, butterflies, and bees.
- Perfect choice as a specimen plant or for large containers.
- Generally pest free. Watch for canker, verticillium wilt, dieback, leaf spots, mildew, and blights. Deer tolerant.
- Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings
- Does not transplant well. It should be planted when young and left undisturbed.
