Chrysogonum virginianum (Green And Gold) is a low-growing, rhizomatous perennial forming a tight clump of triangular, toothed, deep green leaves to 2 in. long (5 cm). Blooming for months from late spring to fall, star-shaped, bright yellow flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), held in clusters rise barely above the foliage. Resembling a golden star, each blossom features five, rounded, slightly-notched petals and contrasting brown stamens. The flowers are borne atop short, hairy stems originating in the leaf axils. Flowering peaks in spring, comes to a standstill in the heat of the summer (particularly in hot summer climates), becoming sporadic afterwards. Very adaptable, tolerating heat, cold, flood and drought, Chrysogonum virginianum most certainly deserves a place in the wild flower or moist shade garden where it can be used as a ground cover or along a path edge.

  • Grows up to 6-12 in. tall (15-30 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm). Will spread from seeds, stolons, runners and expansion of the clumps to form colonies.
  • Performs best in part shade in average, acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Chrysogonum may be grown in full sun only if soils are constantly moist.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for mildew.
  • Easy to grow, this plant is a pretty groundcover for woodland gardens, native plant gardens and naturalized areas.
  • Best propagated by division but can also be increased with softwood cuttings taken in late spring. Seems to benefit from being divided or transplanted at least every other year.
  • Native to woodland areas from Pennsylvania to Florida and Louisiana.
