A popular garden flower since the 19th century, Coreopsis verticillata (Threadleaf Coreopsis) is a rhizomatous perennial boasting a profusion of showy golden-yellow flowers, 1-2 in. across (2-5 cm), from mid-summer to early fall – if spent flowers are deadheaded. Threadleaf Coreopsis is an excellent pollinator plant, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. The blossoms are held high above the foliage on slender stems clad with delicate, dark-green leaves divided into thread-like segments. It forms a rounded airy clump of fine, threadlike foliage that is always handsome and weatherproof. Tolerant to heat, humidity, and drought, Threadleaf Coreopsis is a real workhorse in hot and often dry summer gardens. Long-lived, It adds cheerful color and a delicate texture element to the landscape. Use in the border or naturalized areas and in swaths to provide a long season of color.

  • Grows up to 30-36 in. tall (75-90 cm) and 18-24 in. across (45-60 cm). Spreads slowly by rhizomes and freely self-seeds in the landscape.
  • Performs best in full sun in dry to medium, slightly acidicwell-drained soils. Thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is drought tolerant once established.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Crown rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Coreopsis is ignored by deer
  • Very versatile, it is a welcomed addition to cottage gardens, naturalized areas, prairies, and meadows. Spectacular in mass plantings.
  • Deadheading of spent flowers will keep the plant blooming. Mid to late summer shearing should help tidy up the plant and promote a fall rebloom.
  • Propagate by dividing either in the fall or early spring. Seeds may be sown outside in late fall or the following spring without any cold treatment
  • Native to eastern North America.
