Delphinium grandiflorum 'Summer Nights', Delphinium 'Summer Nights', Chinese Delphinium 'Summer Nights', Bouquet Delphinium 'Summer Nights', Summer Series, Blue Delphinium, Blue flowers, Dwarf Delphiniums

Delphinium grandiflorum ‘Summer Nights’ is a low-growing, short-lived perennial with loose sprays of single, spurred, satiny midnight blue flowers. Blooming for weeks from early to late summer, this dwarf Delphinium forms a compact, bushy mound of well-branched, lacy green leaves. ‘Summer Nights’ belongs to the ‘Summer’ Series, which is renowned for the profuse branching and dwarf size of its hybrids. They also bloom earlier and have better heat tolerance than other Delphiniums of this type. A perfect plant for edging, containers, or as a bedding plant.

  • Grows up to 10-12 in. tall (25-30 cm) and 12 in. wide (30 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils.
  • Attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, but ignored by deer and rabbits!
  • Perfect for beds and borders, edging, cottage gardens, or rock gardens. For the best visual impact, plant your Delphiniums in groups. Outstanding cut flowers.
  • These perennials tend to be short-lived and often start to lose their vigor after 2-3 years. Expect to replant them every few years or propagate new plants from basal cuttings of the original specimens. ‘Summer Nights’ may self-seed, particularly in cool-summer regions.
  • Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage repeat blooming. After flowering, cut down all growth to ground level.
  • Propagate by taking pencil-thick basal cuttings in early spring or by division.
  • All parts of the plant may cause severe discomfort if ingested.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses. Poisoning is rare in humans, however, seeds and plants if ingested can lead to severe illness, paralysis, and even death.
  • Delphinium grandiflorum is native to Russia and China.
