Dudleya pulverulenta (Chalk Liveforever)
Chalk Liveforever, Chalk Lettuce
Long-lived, Dudleya pulverulenta (Chalk Liveforever) is an evergreen succulent with charming rosettes, 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm), of spoon-shaped, white to silver-gray leaves. The fleshy leaves are covered with a fine coat of white powder than can be rubbed off. In late spring to early summer, the rosettes send up long, arching flower spikes which bear clusters of reddish flowers loved by hummingbirds. This plant offsets and slowly increases by producing new rosettes. A lovely plant and great choice for rock gardens or containers.
- Grows up to 18 in. tall and wide (45 cm).
- Easily grown in sandy, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or filtered light in particularly hot areas. This plant can tolerate abundant winter and spring irrigation, but it is best to plant at an angle to allow water to drain off and avoid overhead irrigation. This succulent is drought tolerant and can handle no irrigation in summer and fall. In summer, the rosettes close up to protect themselves from sunburn and dessication. Don't water them, even if they appear crisp. They are dormant and unused to summer rainfall.
- Perfect for rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens or containers.
- Deer resistant
- Virtually disease free. Watch for mealybugs
- Propagate by seed sown as soon as ripe or by root, stem or leaf cuttings in spring
- Native to California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah
