Dudleya caespitosa (Coast Dudleya)
Coast Dudleya, Sand Lettuce, Sand-lettuce, Sealettuce, Dudleya cespitosa, Dudleya cotyledon
Dudleya caespitosa (Coast Dudleya) is an evergreen succulent with pretty rosettes, 4-8 in. across (10-20 cm), packed with up to 30 pale green, oblong, or sometimes fingerlike leaves. The fleshy leaves often display bright red coloring along their edges and tips in the driest conditions. From late spring to early summer, the rosettes send up erect flower spikes which bear clusters of brilliant lemon-yellow, urn-shaped flowers prized by hummingbirds and butterflies. This plant offsets and multiplies by producing new rosettes. Native to the coastline from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Coast Dudleya is commonly found on coastal cliffs. Low maintenance, Coast Dudleya is a lovely plant and a great choice for coastal gardens, rock gardens, or containers.
- Grows up to 4-8 in. tall (10-20 cm) and 4-8 in. wide (10-20 cm).
- Easily grown in dry, rocky, well-drained soils in full sun to full shade. This succulent is drought tolerant, but does require occasional summer water (once per month). Do not overwater as it may cause root rot. Coast Dudleya is also salt spray tolerant.
- Perfect for coastal gardens, rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens, or containers.
- Virtually disease free. Watch for mealybugs, snails, and slugs
- Propagate by seed, stem cuttings, divisions. Propagating Dudleya plants with seeds is very difficult.
- Native to California, Oregon.
