Eriogonum grande var. rubescens (San Miguel Island Buckwheat) is a charming small evergreen shrub forming a dense mound of spoon-shaped leaves on prostrate branches. The foliage is gray-green above and woolly underneath. Profuse tiny vibrant pink flowers held in ball-like clusters bloom for months from spring to fall. They are held on branching inflorescences above the foliage. Rich in nectar, they attract bees and butterflies. Birds are attracted to any seed that develops. Durable and easy to grow, San Miguel Island Buckwheat is native to San Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa islands in the Santa Barbara Channel Islands chain. A great choice for water-wise gardens, rock gardens, spilling over a wall, or as a small groundcover.

  • Grows up to 6-18 in. tall (15-45 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun, in sandy soil with little to no irrigation. This plant is reported to be tolerant of clay and alkaline soils. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Great for dry hills, wildlife gardens, rock gardens, or as a groundcover.
  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and birds, but is deer resistant.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Deadhead to promote more flowers.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to California.
