Eucalyptus gunnii (Cider Gum)

Cider Gum, Cider Tree, Tasmanian Cider Tree

One of the fastest-growing and hardiest Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus gunnii (Cider Gum) is a large evergreen tree of upright, conical habit adorned with a dense canopy and smooth bark, flaking off in large pieces, cream, pinkish and brown. Rich of a sweet fragrance, the aromatic foliage is rounded, bright silver-blue when juvenile, lance-shaped, blue-green when adult. In summer, small clusters of white fluffy flowers with numerous stamens are borne amongst the foliage. Long-lived, this Eucalyptus requires ample growing space and makes a lovely specimen tree. It is good for shade, windbreak or screen. The stems with juvenile leaves are wonderful in flower arrangements.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 30-70 ft. tall (9-21 m) and 18-40 ft. wide (5-12 m).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in average to moderately fertile, slightly acidic, dry to moist soil. Drought tolerant.
  • Easy to grow, easy to care for. Deer resistant
  • Watch for eucalyptus sucker, silver leaf and oedema.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to Tasmania.
