Helianthus divaricatus (Woodland Sunflower) is a showy rhizomatous perennial with sessile or short-stalked leaves, 6 in. long (15 cm), and a profusion of yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), each adorn with up to 8-15 yellow rays and a darker yellow center disk. Blooming from early summer to fall, they are borne atop tall, smooth stems and are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Birds and small mammals love to eat the seeds directly from the seed heads. Perfect for adding summer and fall color in partly shaded borders and naturalized areas.

  • Typically grows up to 2-6 ft. tall (60-180 cm) and 1-3 ft. wide (30-90 cm). Will spread vigorously by creeping rhizomes to form colonies.
  • Performs best in part shade in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. However, this plant is not too fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions. Drought tolerant.
  • Low maintenance, this is an excellent choice for partially shaded borders, cottage gardens, bird or butterfly gardens, wildflower gardens, prairies and meadowsCut flowers last well in bouquets.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • Divide every 3-4 years to control spread and maintain vigor.
  • Native to the eastern United States, Canada.
