Hibiscus syriacus Lil' Kim® Red (Rose of Sharon)
Rose of Sharon Lil' Kim® Red, Shrub Althea Lil' Kim® Red, Hibiscus Lil' Kim® Red, Hibiscus syriacus 'SHIMRR38' PP27195
Noted for its miniature size, Hibiscus syriacus Lil' Kim® Red (Rose of Sharon) is a compact, vase-shaped, deciduous shrub of elegant habit with a profusion of showy, rich rosy-red flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), adorned with a dark red throat. Blooming continuously from summer to fall, each flower lasts for three days instead of one day like other Rose of Sharon. They decorate the bush until late in the season, a valuable attribute in most gardens. The foliage of broadly ovate, shiny leaves appears in late spring, pale yellow-green at first, becoming dark green. This dwarf Hibiscus is perfect for sunny borders, containers and small gardens.
- Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm).
- A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Best flower production is obtained in full sun. Prefers moist, organically rich soils, but tolerates poor soils. Tolerant of drought, urban conditions, heat and humidity.
- Fairly pest and disease free. Watch for leaf spots, blights, rusts, canker and Japanese beetles. Deer resistant.
- Plant in shrub borders for dramatic summer blooms. Great flowering shrub for foundation plantings, hedges or screens or containers.
- Prune to shape in spring. Pruning back to 2-3 buds in late winter may produce bigger blooms.
- Easily propagated by stem cuttings.
- Hibiscus syriacus species is native to China, India, East Asia.
