Leucadendron galpinii, Galpins Conebush, Hairless Conebush, Silver Balls, Mediterranean shrubs, Evergreen Shrubs

Noted for its delightful silver seed cones, Leucadendron galpinii (Galpins Conebush) is a multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with long upright stems of twisted silver-green foliage. In spring, the female plants boast attractive silver cone-like flowers at their branch tips. Prized by floral artists, they look stunning in fresh and dried arrangements. Galpins Conebush is a relatively easy plant to grow, being tolerant of drought and frost (up to 41ºF or -5ºC). Perfect for use in low maintenance and water-wise gardens, this Leucadendron is a great choice for informal screens or hedges. Wind and salt tolerant, it is also well-suited to coastal landscapes.

  • Grows upright to 6-8 ft. tall (180-240 cm) and 4-6 ft. wide (120-180 cm).
  • Easily grown in sandy to loamy, well-drained soils in full sun. Provide regular watering in the first year until the plant is established. Once established, it may require some watering in extremely dry conditions. Drought tolerant. Fertilize sparingly.
  • Great for Mediterranean gardens and xeriscaping. Perfect for screens or hedges.
  • Virtually disease free and pest free.
  • Prune back after flowering to encourage a bushy, compact habit.
  • Propagate by seed or cuttings.
  • Native to South Africa
