Mahonia x media 'Charity' (Oregon Grape)

Oregon Grape 'Charity'

Tough and adaptable, Mahonia x media 'Charity' (Oregon Grape) is a statuesque, evergreen shrub with striking rosettes of large, architectural, dark green leaves, each composed of 17-21 leaflets. Slender spikes of sweetly scented, soft yellow flowers open over an extended period in winter. They attract pollinating insects before giving way to grape-like clusters of glossy, round, deep purple berries in late summer and fall. The fruits attract birds and wildlife. The lustrous evergreen foliage may turn brilliant crimson in fall. The dramatic foliage, showy flowers and berries make this mahonia a strong focal point in the garden.

  • Grows up to 20 ft. tall and wide (6 m).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in fertile, humus-rich, moist or well-drained soils. Protect from drying winds. Once established it is drought tolerant. Occasional watering during dry weather will help plants in sun to maintain a rich green foliage color.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Perfect for borders, foundation plantings, woodland gardens, coastal gardens, city gardens or cottage gardens.
  • Prune the tips in early spring to make a fuller bushier specimen. Older plants need little pruning other than the removal of dead and broken limbs.
  • Propagate by seed and semi-hardwood cuttings.
