Pelargonium peltatum (Ivy Geranium)
Ivy Geranium, Ivyleaf Geranium
Native to South Africa, Pelargonium peltatum (Ivy Geranium) is a trailing, evergreen perennial with fleshy, glossy, bright green leaves, 2-3 in. across (5-7 cm). Adorned with pointed lobes, they resemble those of Ivy (Hedera), hence the common name. Rounded clusters of single or double flowers in shades of red, pink, lavender, or white appear from spring through fall. This plant does particularly well in environments with cool nights and bright days. Providing a summer of lush flowering, Ivy Geranium is a great addition to hanging baskets, window boxes, and raised beds where it will cascade gracefully down, creating a waterfall effect.
- Grows up to 1-2 ft. tall (30-60 cm) and 3-5 ft. wide (90-150 cm).
- Performs best in full sun or light shade, in average to organically rich, neutral to slightly alkaline, medium moisture, and well-drained soils. Water regularly during the growing season. Best in full sun, but welcomes some light shade in the hottest climates. It is drought tolerant once established.
- Great candidate for beds and borders, Mediterranean gardens, containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes. Makes a great ground cover too!
- Pelargonium peltatum is hardy to USDA 10 - 11 and grown as an annual in the ground in cooler areas.
- Deadhead spent flowering stems. Pinch stems to encourage bushiness and avoid legginess.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
- Native to South Africa
