Persicaria virginiana (Virginia Knotweed)

Knotweed, Virginia Knotweed, Jumpseed, Polygonum virginianum, Tovara virginiana

Persicaria virginiana (Virginia Knotweed) is a vigorous perennial forming a spreading foliage mound of broad, oval, medium green leaves. In mid to late summer, tiny, white flowers are borne on long, slender stems. They will give way to oval shaped seeds which will spring off the plant when touched. This species is seldom seen in gardens.

  • Typically forms a bushy, spreading clump up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm). This plant can spread aggressively in the garden by both rhizomes and self-seeding if happy.
  • Thrives in average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade.
  • A welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens and woodland gardens.
  • Attracts birds and butterflies, but is ignored by deer.
  • Cut back to ground level in autumn as foliage dies back.
  • Native to Japan, Himalayas, northeastern United States
