Persicaria virginiana (Virginia Knotweed)

Knotweed, Virginia Knotweed, Jumpseed, Polygonum virginianum, Tovara virginiana

Persicaria virginiana (Virginia Knotweed) is a vigorous perennial forming a spreading foliage mound of broad, oval, medium green leaves. In mid to late summer, tiny, white flowers are borne on long, slender stems. They will give way to oval-shaped seeds which will spring off the plant when touched. This species is seldom seen in gardens.

  • Typically forms a bushy, spreading clump up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm). This plant can spread aggressively in the garden by both rhizomes and self-seeding if happy.
  • Thrives in average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade.
  • A welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, and woodland gardens.
  • Attracts birds and butterflies, but is ignored by deer.
  • Cut back to ground level in autumn as the foliage dies back.
  • Native to Japan, Himalayas, northeastern United States
