Rhubarb Ace Of Hearts, Rheum 'Ace of Hearts', Rheum 'Ace of Spades'
A very ornamental plant, Rheum x hybridum 'Ace Of Hearts' (Rhubarb) is a clump-forming rhizomatous perennial grown primarily for its large, heart-shaped, deep green leaves adorned with showy beet-red undersides. Blooming from late spring to early summer, feathery plumes of pale pink flowers rise on tall flower stalks above the foliage. A dramatic accent plant for borders or near streams and ponds. Ace of Hearts' is a hybrid between the giant Rheum palmatum (Chinese Rhubarb) and the smaller Rheum kialense, making it well-suited to smaller gardens.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 3-5 ft. high (90-150 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm). Once established, plants persist for many years.
- Performs best in full sun to part shade, in fertile, evenly moist but well-drained soils. Appreciates some part shade in hot summer climates. Mulch in winter to help retain moisture.
- Easy to grow, this ornamental Rhubarb is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, and wildlife gardens.
- Propagate by division in spring.
- Deadhead spikes after flowering.
- Virtually disease and pest free. Keep an eye out for blackfly (black aphids).
- Unlike its culinary cousin (Rheum x hybridum) which is grown as a vegetable for harvest of its edible leaf stalks, Ornamental Rhubarb leaves should not be consumed. May cause severe discomfort if ingested
