Rosa 'Dorothy Perkins' (Rambling Rose)

Rose 'Dorothy Perkins', Climbing Rose 'Dorothy Perkins', Climbing Roses, Rambler Roses, Floribunda Roses, Wichurana Roses

Forming charming cascades of flowers, Rosa 'Dorothy Perkins' is a very vigorous rambler rose with large clusters of double, salmon-pink, rosette-shaped flowers. Slightly fragrant, each bloom, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), is packed with 26-40 petals. As the blooms age, their color gets darker, adding depth to the floral display. The long, flexible canes of this rambling rose are clothed with small, glossy, dark green leaves, which turn rusty orange in the fall. Once the most popular rambler, 'Dorothy Perkins' is pretty hardy and perfect for trailing along fences and other garden structures.

  • Blooms once in late spring or early summer, with scattered blooms during the rest of the year.
  • Grows up to 10-20 ft. tall (3-6 m) and spreads up to 8 ft. (2.5 m).
  • Best grown in full sun to part shade, in moist, moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soils. While shade tolerant, best flower production and disease resistance usually occur in full sun. Provide good air circulation.
  • Ideal as a climber for arbors, fences and other garden structures.
  • Some susceptibility to mildew
  • Prune after flowering is finished.
  • Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn or by T-budding and grafting in summer
  • 'Dorothy Perkins' was first bred in the United States By E. Alvin Miller in 1901. He created this lovely variety by crossing the Madame Gabriel Luizet rose with a Rosa wichuraiana.
