Introduced in the Victorian era, Rudbeckia laciniata 'Hortensia' is a tall, robust herbaceous perennial with branched stems bearing fluffy, fully double flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), packed with golden-yellow rays. Blooming profusely from midsummer to fall, the blossoms rise atop strong flower stems above the foliage of deeply-lobed, dark green leaves. When in full bloom, this Rudbeckia is a sight to behold with its masses of bright yellow flowers. However, it has a tendency to flop under the weight of its flowers. To avoid a floppy habit, pinch the growth in early summer to promote bushiness. A vigorous spreader, it makes a bold statement in the late-season garden.
- Grows in upright clumps, up to 5-7 ft. tall (150-210 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm). Can spread aggressively by underground stems.
- Easy to grow, trouble-free, and low care, it performs best in full sun or part shade in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils. If kept well watered and grown in full sun, this beauty will not require staking for most of the season.
- Great at the back of borders, in meadows, or in cottage gardens. This Rudbeckia makes excellent cut flowers if you can reach them!
- Attracts butterflies, but deer ignore it!
- Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional bloom.
- Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Divide clumps to control growth.
