Rudbeckia maxima (Giant Coneflower) is a striking, tall herbaceous perennial prized for its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers from mid-summer to early fall. This late-blooming coneflower produces large blossoms, up to 3 in. across (7 cm), with broad, drooping, golden-yellow petals surrounding a prominent dark brown central cone that may reach 2-6 in. tall (6-15 cm). Rich in nectar, the flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators, rising on sparsely leaved stems above a bold clump of large, smooth, blue-gray leaves. In fall and winter, the decorative seedheads extend the plant’s season of interest and provide food for visiting birds. Native to moist, sunny prairies, meadows, pastures, and fields in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and South Carolina, Giant Coneflower is an easy-going perennial that tolerates light shade, heat, occasional drought, and a wide range of soils. It is excellent at the back of sunny borders, in cutting, pollinator, or cottage gardens, and in meadows or naturalized plantings.

  • Grows up to 6-8 ft. tall (180-240 cm) and 4 ft. wide (120 cm). May self-seed and spread by underground rhizomes.
  • Performs best in full sun or light shade in deep, moist, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Ideal for the back of borders, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, and prairies and meadows.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Moderately deer resistant.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional blooming.
  • Propagate by division in spring or autumn.
  • Native to Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and South Carolina.
