Blooming heartily from early to mid-spring, Scilla bifolia 'Rosea' (Alpine Squill) is one of the earliest spring bloomers, producing two strap-shaped, semi-erect basal leaves and 1 to 6 upright scapes, each of which is topped with a one-sided 2-10 flowered raceme of starry soft pink flowers. Alpine Squill is a beautiful and reliable addition to the landscape, where it will happily multiply in optimum growing conditions. A wonderful way to add a sea of color to the rock garden or the border front. This bulbous perennial is native to lower mountain areas, from Central and Southern Europe south to Turkey and Syria.
- Typically grows up to 3-6 in. tall (7-15 cm). Foliage will disappear by summer as the plant goes dormant. This plant will spread by offsets and self-seeding.
- Easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Performs well in average garden soils and thrives in sandy loams.
- This plant is rarely affected by pests or diseases and is resistant to deer and rodents. Just plant it and forget about it!
- This charming naturalizer provides color and contrast to the woodland garden, beds, borders, rock gardens, under deciduous trees or shrubs, and naturalized areas. Spectacular when planted in large drifts. Combines beautifully with other flowering bulbs or perennials. Excellent edging plant.
