One of the earliest spring bloomers, Scilla siberica ‘Alba’ is a bulbous perennial boasting pure white, bell-shaped, nodding flowers (2-5 per stem) in early to mid-spring. Each bulb produces 3 to 4 flower stems above 2-4 broadly linear, green leaves. Easy to grow, this is one of the most winter-hardy of the scillas and can be found in hardiness zone 2. A great naturalizer, it multiplies and comes back year after year, turning the landscape into a sea of white. Looks best when planted in large drifts.

  • Grows up to 3-6 in. tall and wide (7-15 cm).
  • Thrives in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.
  • Stunning when massed around shrubs or trees, in sweeping drifts in woodlands or wild areas, or naturalized in the lawn.
  • It combines nicely with Chionodoxa (Glory-of-the-Snow), which flowers a bit earlier and overlaps with Galanthus (Snowdrops). And it stays around to greet the earliest daffodils!
  • Propagate by seed or divide offsets when dormant
  • This plant has high-severity poison characteristics. Leaves, blooms, bulbs, and seeds are all toxic.
  • Toxic to humans, dogs, and cats.
  • Native to southwestern Russia, the Caucasus, and Turkey.
