Resembling miniature hyacinths, award-winning Scilla mischtschenkoana ‘Tubergeniana’ (White Squill) is the earliest to flower, generally in late winter or early spring. This remarkable bulbous perennial features charming racemes of up to 6 star-shaped, china-blue flowers, about 1 inch wide (2 cm), adorned with a dark stripe through each petal. The blooms last as long as 2 months, starting to flower with the snowdrops and crocus and remaining in perfect condition until the daffodils appear some weeks later. Although it is slow to increase, it is incredibly long-lived and very versatile. Perfect under shrubs and trees, at the front of borders or for the rock garden.
