Sedum album (White Stonecrop)
Hardy Baby Tears, White Stonecrop, Tall White Stonecrop, Thick-Leaved Stonecrop, Worm Grass, Sedum athoum, Sedum serpentini
Drought and heat tolerant, Sedum album (White Stonecrop) is a low growing, mat-forming, evergreen succulent perennial with a dense foliage of small, fleshy, finger-shaped, green leaves. The leaves take on a red flush in the fall and winter. Moisture also affects the leaf coloration. In dry spells, this sedum darkens to red or brown. With ample water, the foliage greens up. Clusters of tiny, star-shaped, white flowers bloom just above the foliage in midsummer. Attractive in full flower, the plant is visited by scores of butterflies. Vigorous, Sedum album spreads along the ground by creeping stems which root at the nodes. Very versatile, it can be used to create a pretty groundcover, between stepping stones, or in rock gardens. It is also wonderful in containers where the foliage and flowers can be enjoyed throughout the season. A popular choice for green roofs.
- Grows up to 3-6 in. tall (7-15 cm) and 18-24 in. wide (45-60 cm).
