Stonecrop, Ice Plant, Orpine
Sedums are almost perfect plants. Vigorous, carefree, good-looking, with a season of interest lasting more than six months, who could resist? Even the bees and butterflies can’t!
Sedum, commonly known as Stonecrop, is a large genus of flowering plants from the Crassulaceae family, native to the Northern Hemisphere but extending into the southern hemisphere in Africa and South America.
Mat-Forming Sedums: These sedums form dense, spreading mounds or mats of foliage. They are typically used as groundcovers and in rock gardens. Varieties such as Sedum spurium and Sedum album fall under this category. They have small, thick leaves and bloom in a variety of colors, depending on the species.
Creeping Sedums: Also known as stonecrops, these sedums produce long, trailing stems and are perfect for hanging baskets or as spillers in containers. Sedum sieboldii and Sedum lineare are popular varieties. They produce clusters of star-shaped flowers during summer.
Upright Sedums: This group is characterized by their tall, upright growth habit, making them excellent for borders and mixed beds. They produce dense flower heads that can be left on the plant for winter interest. One of the most well-known upright sedums is Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (also known as Hylotelephium ‘Herbstfreude’). These sedums have a strong, upright habit and produce large, often flat clusters of flowers in summer or fall.
