Widely used both as a groundcover, Sedum kamtschaticum (Orange Stonecrop) is a low growing, clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial with fleshy, scalloped, bright green leaves. Each tip develops a bud that opens to a golden yellow flower cluster, 2-3 in. across (5-7 cm) in late summer. As the flowers fade, the seedheads develop reddish-pink tones, creating a terrific bicolor effect. The foliage turns stunning orange-red in the fall, but disappears in cold winter months. Orange Stonecrop spreads slowly by short underground rhizomes, and can be used to create rivers of color in the garden or as a cheerful groundcover. It is also wonderful on green roofs and in containers.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Grows with a spreading and sprawling habit up to 6-7 in. tall (15-18 cm) and 12 in. wide (30 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Protect from excessive winter wet. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Perfect for rock gardens, city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens, banks and slopes, edging, containers or as a groundcover
  • Virtually pest free. May be subject to fungal and bacterial crown rot and roots rots. Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Cut back after flowering to maintain shape or leave seedheads overwinter
  • Propagate by division in spring, or by softwood cuttings of non-flowering shoots in early summer.
  • Native to northern China and along the Pacific coast of Siberia including the Kamchatka Peninsula.
