Sisyrinchium mucronatum (Needletip Blue-Eyed Grass) is a clump-forming perennial noted for its dense tuft of narrow grass-like green leaves and its delicate, pale to deep blue, star-shaped flowers, 3/4 in. across (2 cm), adorned petals tipped with a conspicuous needle-like point. A bright spot at the base of each tepal creates a yellow throat, with a bouquet of bright yellow-tipped stamens in the center. Borne in clusters of 2-4 blossoms atop short, slender stalks, they bloom, usually one at a time, for a few weeks in spring to summer. Native to Canada and the southeastern U.S.A., Needletip Blue-Eyed Grass occurs naturally in fields, meadows, shorelines and forest edges. It is a charming plant for naturalizing in moist meadows or planted in groups in the front of borders.

  • Grows up to 6-18 in. tall (15-45 cm) and 6-8 in. wide (15-20 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun or light shade, in moist, well-drained soils. Will tolerate dry spells once established.
  • Great for beds and borders, native plant gardens, cottage gardens or rock gardens. Good as a groundcover too.
  • Propagate by seed. Sow in the fall (cold/moist stratification).
  • Native to eastern North America
