Needletip Blue-Eyed Grass, Slender Blue-Eyed Grass, Sisyrinchium intermedium, Sisyrinchium atlanticum
Sisyrinchium mucronatum (Needletip Blue-Eyed Grass) is a clump-forming perennial noted for its dense tuft of narrow grass-like green leaves and its delicate, pale to deep blue, star-shaped flowers, 3/4 in. across (2 cm), adorned petals tipped with a conspicuous needle-like point. A bright spot at the base of each tepal creates a yellow throat, with a bouquet of bright yellow-tipped stamens in the center. Borne in clusters of 2-4 blossoms atop short, slender stalks, they bloom, usually one at a time, for a few weeks in spring to summer. Native to Canada and the southeastern U.S.A., Needletip Blue-Eyed Grass occurs naturally in fields, meadows, shorelines and forest edges. It is a charming plant for naturalizing in moist meadows or planted in groups in the front of borders.
