Taxus baccata ‘Dovastoniana’ (English Yew) is a large, spreading, evergreen shrub or small tree with horizontal branches adorned with pendulous tips and sometimes, several upright central leaders. It is densely clothed in dark green leaves. This male cultivar occasionally produces a female branch adorned with conspicuous, coral-red seed-bearing cones. A fast grower, 12 in. per year (30 cm), this English Yew is ideal for providing year-round structure and makes a gorgeous specimen plant.

  • Grows up to 6-15 ft. tall (180-450 cm) and 4-8 ft. wide (120-240 cm).
  • A full sun to partial shade lover, this plant is easily grown in evenly moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates full shade as well as a wide range of soils.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant
  • No regular pruning necessary, but can be trimmed and shaped when required.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings or grafting
  • Most parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic by ingestion. The taxine alkaloids contained in yew berries, needles or bark are poisonous.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
  • Native to Europe, Atlas Mountains, Asia Minor, Caucauses.
