A very popular choice, Taxus baccata ‘Repandens’ (English Yew) is a small, prostrate and wide-spreading, evergreen shrub with undulating branches adorned with pendulous tips. It is densely clothed in long, glossy, dark green leaves held in two ranks. This female cultivar rarely produces the conspicuous, coral-red seed-bearing cones. A moderate grower, 6-8 in. per year (15-20 cm), this spreading English Yew is ideal as a medium-sized groundcover, especially in woodland conditions.

  • Grows up to 2-4 ft. tall (60-120 cm) and can spread to 15 ft. wide (450 cm).
  • A full sun to partial shade lover, this plant is easily grown in evenly moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates full shade as well as a wide range of soils.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant, for foundation plantings, rock gardens.
  • No regular pruning necessary, but can be trimmed and shaped when required.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings or grafting
  • Most parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic by ingestion. The taxine alkaloids contained in yew berries, needles or bark are poisonous.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
  • Native to Europe, Atlas Mountains, Asia Minor, Caucauses.
